When learning how to use pepper spray, it’s vital to understand how your personal safety device works. Learn from David Nance, personal safety expert and CEO of SABRE, how to properly deploy your pepper spray in this video.
Step 2 of How to Use Pepper Spray: Get a Grip
Now, let’s look at what kind of pepper spray you have. Do you have a flip top, twist top, or a twist lock model? Does your pepper spray have a finger grip or not? Get comfortable with it in your hand, and take a moment to get a good grip.
You want a nice, strong grip in your dominant hand with your thumb on the trigger and your other fingers around the canister. The thumb is critical – this helps you have a steady hold and decreases any risk of it being taken from you.
If you have a flip top, you’ll slide your thumb under the top of the canister and hold it out in front of you. If you have a twist lock, you’ll slide the nozzle to the ‘open and unlocked’ position.
